Concept / Preliminary / Detail Design Project
Competition 1st prize
The New Terminal of Sabiha Gökçen International Airport was designed as a contemporary transportation hub responding to the rapidly growing air traffic demand on Istanbul’s Asian side. The project won the invited competition in 2006 and became operational in 2009.
The terminal forms part of an integrated airport complex including VIP facilities, an airport hotel, apron expansions, and parking structures.
The design balances international terminal standards with a spatial identity rooted in Istanbul. The wave-form steel roof spanning large bays defines the architectural character while introducing daylight into the main hall, creating a clear and spacious passenger environment.
A hybrid structural system strengthened with seismic isolators ensures uninterrupted operation after major earthquakes. Thanks to its flexible planning approach, the terminal has expanded beyond its initial capacity and today serves over 40 million passengers annually.
The project emphasizes flexibility, operational efficiency, and a strong spatial identity reflecting local character.
