The project was awarded first prize in a design competition organized by the State Airports Administration (DHMI) to better serve the increasing number of tourists at Antalya Airport and has since been implemented. The competition sought a master plan for how new terminals could be phased to eventually accommodate 40 million passengers annually, specifically requiring the site selection and design of the first terminal building with a 5 million-passenger capacity.

According to the master plan, the first unit was positioned to utilize the existing apron for economic efficiency and located to be prominent from the highway. In line with the competition specifications, both arriving and departing passengers connect to the building at the existing road level. Following intensive studies on passenger, baggage, and service circulation, a unique architectural solution was achieved.

The terminal building is designed as a long rectangular block on the landside, clearly separating arriving and departing passengers, and a “U-shaped” block on the apron side. The geometry of the apron-side block was determined by aircraft parking positions. This layout provides the shortest distance to the aircraft upon entry and allows for the construction of subsequent units in the closest possible proximity.

As Antalya Airport is a tourism-heavy hub, the design aimed to embody an architectural character unique to Antalya, ensuring a positive and memorable first and last impression for tourists visiting the country.
